Unharvested Potential: Exploring rangatahi as changemakers to pursue food secure futures in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Listed in ZivaHub

In Aotearoa New Zealand, we export enough food to feed 40 million people while nearly 20% of our population are experiencing severe ongoing food insecurity (inadequate or uncertain access to nutritional, good food).
Description
In New Zealand there are no national initiatives or government policy that successfully address the problem. Community organisations like food banks and soup kitchens provide food assistance, but do not have the support necessary to generate long lasting food security.

This research integrates design for social innovation and community-led initiatives like Kaibosh Food Rescue - where I’ve worked for three years - to provide a multidisciplinary approach.
I have witnessed first-hand the impact of our failing food systems; we are a wealthy country producing an abundance of kai, yet so many people struggle to access affordable and nutritious food. Significant structural change is needed beyond piecemeal solutions.

Unharvested Potential responds to the scale and complexity of this problem by proposing a fellowship programme for rangatahi, Fallowship, as a strategy for setting in motion long- term structural change beyond a single design response.

Fallowship empowers rangatahi to be the future leaders of our food systems by immersing them in community and supporting them to develop meaningful change.

In doing this, the design research designs a system that, in itself, designs a new system.

This research asks how can we collaborate with rangatahi to create new pathways to equitable food security solutions in local food systems? This research uses research for design and research through design methodologies, utilising design for social innovation methods such as participatory design, speculative design, and autoethnography.
This research develops through interviews with key players in local food systems; speculative design workshops with rangatahi; culminating in a strategic design proposal for a fellowship programme.
