USING SATELLITES AND ROBOT CAMERAS TO MONITOR GLACIERS - A STUDY OF EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

Listed in NASA Earthdata CMR

The present project was achieved according the collaboration between Instituto Antrtico Argentino (IAA - Argentina) and National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC - USA).

Description

The project participants are: Dr. Ted Scambos, Mr.

Yevgueniy Yermolin, Sr. Juan Carlos Quinteros (IAA), Mr. Ronald Ross, Mr.

Robert Bauer, (NSIDC) - second part of the project. Objectives of the study: 1) rate of surface densification, 2) rate of basal melting, 3) weather and tidal events associated with calving, 4) study of melt ponds and drainage, 5) rapid fine-scale calving. Field duties have been done during February and March of 2006 on the icebergs "Amigos" and A22A.

Tasks include: Installation of probes, batteries and other devices on a mounting tower to monitor the climatic variables on the iceberg. The equipment disposes a satellite positioning system (GPS) in order to know the sailing and movement conditions of the iceberg. The automatic weather station (Campbell Sci) is provided with satellite transmitter and a camera and video system remotely controlled by an Iridium linkage.

Ice-core sampling from iceberg A22A using a manual bore-holing sampler. The aim of this sampling is to know the different properties of ice and the temperature profile (maximum depth reached: 11m) SPANISH USO DE SATLITES Y CMARAS DE VIDEO ROBOTIZADAS PARA EL MONITOREO DE GLACIARES, UN ESTUDIO ACERCA DE LOS EFECTOS DEL CALENTAMIENTO GLOBAL.

Robert Bauer, (NSIDC) e Ing. P. Skvarca (IAA). Segunda etapa: Dr.

Yevgueniy Yermolin, Sr. Juan Carlos Quinteros (IAA - Argentina), Mr. Ronald Ross, Mr.

Robert Bauer, (NSIDC).
